Iwilldoit, a resilient nine-year-old trained by Sam Thomas, delivered a spirited performance to finish second in the renowned Grade 2 Peter Marsh Handicap Chase at Haydock. The race, spanning a challenging 3 miles and 1 furlong, saw Iwilldoit hit the last alongside Mr Vango, a formidable Irish contender. Despite the fierce competition, Iwilldoit maintained his pace, eventually conceding victory by three lengths.

    The Rise of Iwilldoit

With a storied career that includes a 2021 Welsh Grand National win, Iwilldoit has consistently demonstrated grit and determination on the track. Most recently, he finished third in the Chepstow showcase, continuing to defy the odds at the age of 12. Under the skilled guidance of jockey Jack Tudor, Iwilldoit represented Abergavenny trainer Thomas with commendable resilience, securing a £21,370 reward for his efforts.

    Trainer Sam Thomas’s Success

The recent achievements of Iwilldoit cap off a successful week for Thomas. Just two days prior, another one of his charges, Katate Dori, claimed second place in the Somerset National Handicap Chase at Wincanton. Despite being the 11/8 favorite, Katate Dori was edged out by a 14/1 shot, Collector’s Item, marking a tactical race that kept spectators on the edge of their seats.

    Trouble for Venetia Williams

Meanwhile, the Haydock race was less forgiving for Wye Valley trainer Venetia Williams. Her runner, Royale Pagaille, heavily weighted and a favorite at 5/2, struggled to maintain form and was pulled up by jockey Charlie Deutsch with five furlongs to go. An unfortunate blunder at the seventh jump appeared to dash any hopes of completing a hat-trick of victories after triumphs in 2021 and 2022.

Other Highlights in the Racing Circuit

Away from Haydock, the racing world saw some bright spots. At Ascot, jockey-owner David Maxwell rode In D’or, trained by Williams, to a win in the 1 mile 7 furlongs BetMGM Juvenile Hurdle, clinching the £8,900 prize. On the flat, trainer David Evans witnessed his horse Eagle Day secure fourth place at Chelmsford’s 1-mile Bet365 Handicap, finishing just a length behind the favorite Apiarist.

    Looking Ahead

The impressive display by Iwilldoit has sparked discussions of a potential Grand National bid in April, with many anticipating a thrilling performance. Thomas remains optimistic about his prospects, looking ahead to future races with the hope of building on the momentum generated by recent performances.

Reflecting on the day’s events at Haydock and beyond, the races offered a fascinating glimpse into the dynamics of UK horse racing. From the thrilling finishes to the unexpected challenges, the world of horse racing continues to captivate, showcasing the exceptional skill of both trainers and jockeys alike.
