In response to rising living costs, equestrian businesses and organisations are stepping up to ease financial pressures on horse owners. These initiatives focus on making essential horse care affordable while encouraging preventative measures to avoid costly issues down the line.

Affordable Vet Care: Prevention Over Cure

Many veterinary practices have offered monthly payment plans for equine health, including vaccinations, dental care, and routine check-ups for years. Now, some practices are taking it further.
The Hook Norton Veterinary Group (HNVG), based in Oxfordshire, has introduced its Equiplan Gold scheme for £30 a month. This plan covers routine examinations, annual hoof balance X-rays, dental treatment, and worming programs. It also offers discounts on lameness exams and Agria insurance.
HNVG director Sam Cutts explained that the scheme is designed to encourage preventative care:
“We know people are feeling the financial pinch. Our goal is to help owners maintain their horses’ health without worrying about the cost of calling the vet. Waiting too long can turn small issues into big problems,” she said.
Hoof balance X-rays are heavily promoted as part of the plan. “Many lameness issues come from poor foot balance. By making these X-rays affordable, owners can work with farriers using this detailed information, reducing the risk of serious problems,” Ms Cutts added.

The British Horse Society (BHS) prioritised horse health, even in challenging financial times.
“Skipping vaccinations, dental check-ups, or hoof maintenance may seem like a way to save money, but it often leads to bigger health problems and higher costs in the long run,” said Sarah Phillips, BHS chief operating officer.

The BHS also reminded owners that its Horse Care and Welfare Helpline is available to provide advice on maintaining horse wellbeing.

SEIB Insurance has launched a new rewards program for its classic horse insurance policyholders. The SEIB Rewards platform offers discounts and special deals from equestrian brands like Dengie, PolyJumps, and Equine Faecal Egg Count Solutions.

“We’re excited to give back to our policyholders by providing real value through discounts and exclusive offers,” said SEIB’s digital marketing manager, {Katie Oswald.

British Eventing (BE) has also changed its membership packages to make horse sports more accessible. These include:

    • Subsidised training opportunities.
    • Payment plans for membership and training fees (interest-free instalments).
    • A rewards platform offering discounts with BE’s equestrian partners.

“We know times are tough. Our aim is to offer the best value possible while reinvesting in the sport we all love,” said BE chief executive Rosie Williams.

From affordable vet care to rewards programs and flexible payment plans, these new measures are designed to support horse owners during difficult times. Prioritising horse health and wellbeing remains the core message, ensuring financial challenges don’t compromise equine care.
