The 2025 edition of the Grand National is shaping up to be one for the record books, with a remarkable number of grey horses lining up at the start. In this year’s race, seven grey horses will thunder down the legendary course, making up over 20% of the 34-runner field. This is the most ‘grey’ horses ever seen in the Grand National, a spectacle that’s got British bookmakers on edge.

A Historic Day for Grey Horses

Grey horses have always held a special place in the hearts of racing fans, and this year’s line-up is no exception. Not since the days of The Lamb, Nicolaus Silver, and Neptune Collonges has there been such a strong contingent. These greys are not only crowd favorites but also serious contenders in the race.

    Meet the Contenders

Among the standout grey horses, Intense Raffles leads the pack as the Irish National winner, shoeing up as the spirited hopeful under the training of Tom Gibney. Kandoo Kid, trained by the legendary Paul Nicholls, aims to follow in the hoofprints of Neptune Collonges, Nicholls’ previous grey victor in the National.

Last year’s runner-up, Vanillier, enters the fray with renewed vigour, having refined his form with the addition of blinkers. Meanwhile, Nicky Henderson has high hopes for newcomer Hyland, bringing youth and raw potential into the spotlight.

    Bookmaker Challenges

With seven greys taking to the track, the odds present quite an intriguing scenario. Racing enthusiasts going for a grey horse now have abundant choices, with wagers offered on everything from single winners to ambitious assumes of first, second, and third finishes all being filled by greys. The odds are tempting, leaving bookmakers concerned about their bottom line should the greys trot away with top honors.

    Experience and Strategy

Paul Nicholls, a familiar face in the winner’s circle, has provided a keen strategy for this year’s event. He talks about pacing Kandoo Kid with precision, preparing him specifically with the National in mind. Nicholls remembers the days when his guidance led to victory and positions himself to challenge for the trainer’s title.

Bringing an exciting blend of young talent and time-tested wisdom, Nicky Henderson’s preparation with Hyland might finally reward him with something that’s eluded him for decades: a Grand National victory. Training matter-of-factly, Henderson taps into his long experience to guide Hyland through the expert exercises and racing conditions he considers ideal.

    Looking Ahead

The excitement ahead of the Grand National is palpable, as the gates prepare to open for these remarkable grey runners. Will the bookmakers’ fears be realized, or will familiar hues prevail? One thing is certain: the 2025 Grand National promises to leave a lasting impression, further enriching the storied fabric of racing history with chapters written by grey legends thundering down the finish line.
