Saturday’s Choices: Sir Gino’s Newbury and Warwick Options

Sir Gino, the magnificent equine athlete under the care of esteemed trainer Nicky Henderson, is set to make waves this weekend with two enticing racing options on the table. With his eyes set on glory, Sir Gino is eyeing either the William Hill Game Spirit Chase at Newbury or the Kingmaker at Warwick. This talented horse has caught the racing world’s attention, particularly after his dazzling victory over Ballyburn at Kempton during the festive season.

A swiftly rising star, Sir Gino has already become a hot favorite for the Arkle at Cheltenham—a testament to his burgeoning prowess on the track. According to Henderson, who shared his insights on Monday’s Nick Luck Daily Podcast, the plan is to head to Newbury where Sir Gino will potentially face a field of seasoned competitors, including Djelo, Edwardstone, and Matata.

“Sir Gino is good, we’re very happy,” expressed Henderson, sharing an insider’s glimpse into his charge’s preparations. “He schooled last week and worked on Saturday. We’re being blessed with a dry spell, albeit a touch of frost may grace the weekend, yet we remain hopeful for welcoming ground conditions by Saturday.” The track at Newbury, with its expansive room and straightforward nature, seems an ideal choice for a strapping horse like Sir Gino.

Nevertheless, Henderson keeps his options open, remarking, “I’m not saying Warwick isn’t appealing, and we will put him in the Kingmaker too just in case anything happens at Newbury, but that’s the plan.” His strategic thinking is evident, balancing between Newbury’s prospectively favorable environment and the tactical backup at Warwick.

This weekend’s racing will also feature some exciting rivalries. In the Game Spirit Chase, Sir Gino could find competition in other adept racers like JPR One, Libberty Hunter, and Master Chewy. The Kingmaker’s lineup promises its own allure with Dan Skelton’s Henry VIII victor L’Eau Du Sud leading a charge against Casa No Mento, Riskintheground, Rubaud, and Tedley.

Yet, beyond this weekend’s events, Henderson cast his eye further afield, reflecting on the stunning scene at the recent Dublin Racing Festival. He acknowledged Majborough, a formidable opponent trained by the legendary Willie Mullins, as a potential market rival in the antepost standings for the Arkle. “It’s the first time I’ve watched him properly,” admitted Henderson. “His jumping could probably be a little bit slicker at times, but he was impressive. He’s a fine big horse, much like Sir Gino, and they’re the same age, a rare pairing of five-year-olds sprinting to the forefront of their careers over fences.”

With such a built-up saga unfolding, this Saturday promises to be a riveting spectacle, with Sir Gino poised to either conquer Newbury or leave his mark at Warwick. Racing fans old and new should brace themselves for a thundering display on the track, a tale of speed, skill, and strategy, where every gallop echoes the heartbeat of this grand sport.
